→ SOCIAL IMPACT ARCHITECTURE

The MAAK is an award- winning spatial practice based in Cape Town with a focus on ’social impact architecture’.

We specialise in public buildings and public space making. It is in these fields, that we feel our expertise and interests can yield the largest possible positive impact.

We work closely with other building professionals to deliver world-class and provocative project outcomes.

→ PEOPLE/ COMMUNITY ORIENTATED

Our projects are approached with the above in mind to deliver sustainable and impactful work. Our attitude towards architecture involves rigorous engagement with client, community and ‘user’ groups to inform appropriate and long-lasting spatial strategies.

We choose to work in challenging urban environments and partner with hand-picked organisations, funding bodies, philanthropists and CSI teams to realise important architectural projects with communities that need them the most.

→ A PROCESS BASED PRACTICE

The MAAK is underpinned by a deep interest in materials and process. Spanning across educational, experimental and conventional modes of making, our diverse body of work blurs the boundaries of traditional architectural production.

Ongoing ‘design - make’ projects act as testing ground for the studio and are an active channel through which we actively explore new material possibilities and dynamic architectural narratives.

Our unique approach to practice has led to the successful completion of work in South Africa and across Europe.

As a pre-cursor to projects or
as once-off investigations, our in-depth engagement covers everything from ‘material studies’ and ‘collaborative pedagogy’ to ‘brief-making’ and ‘community engagement’.
